The Nielsen’s Frozen Custard Story
Rexburg Store
Frozen Custard originated on the boardwalk in Atlantic City over 50 years ago. It quickly became a favorite treat spreading to many areas of the east. Then, with the development of less expensive imitation ingredients, substitutions, and more convenient freezing equipment, frozen desserts lost much of the old-fashioned quality and wholesome goodness they began with. Nielsen’s Frozen Custard is proud to bring back the goodness and taste of a bygone era. Our recipe, machine, and concern for quality all result in the rebirth of the smooth real dairy taste that Americans
love. Steve Nielsen started mixing, freezing, and scooping his frozen custard in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1981. The product and concept worked. “Nielsen’s” was quickly recognized as a quality product at a family price. Just a few months after he opened, an annual “Critics Choice Award” named his frozen custard “the smoothest stuff available.”
What is Nielsen’s Frozen Custard?
A Well Tested Recipe—-
It is not just one ingredient or process that makes Nielsen’s Frozen Custard more delicious, it is a combination of the exacting recipe with real dairy cream, rich eggs, and other natural ingredients. It is also the quality of flavorings, cocoas, fresh roasted nuts, real berry purees, and a natural vanilla.
Our Own Specially Designed Freezing Machine—
We manufacture our specially designed one-of-a-kind freezing machine in Salt Lake city. It has been tested and perfected to produce the finest product possible. So many ice cream machines today are designed to put air, or “fluff”, into the finished product. Some ice creams calling themselves “premium” are as much as 50 percent air. Taste our frozen custard – you can tell the difference! Our machine is specially designed to freeze our custard recipe without pumping all that fluff into it.
Smooth , Smooth, Smooth—
Nielsen’s Frozen custard is fresh. Many ice creams are manufactured in distant cities and trucked cross-country often making them weeks old before being sold. Our frozen custard is made every few hours right in the store. In concept, marketing and texture, frozen custard is in a world of its own. The frozen custard we serve is made from fresh cream and eggs. The smooth creamy texture is unrivaled. It is also no accident.

Custard Treats are served at our drive up and in the dining room.
Our custard is “dipped” to preserve the creaminess and fresh consistency. Custard is a “premium ice cream” product. It is made with milk that has only 10% butterfat. If it had one percent less it would be considered ice milk. That makes it one of the healthiest treats around!!! So how can it taste so much creamier than all the rest? It’s the way it’s frozen, without whipping air into it. You have to try it, then you understand the difference. It makes you say “MMMMMMM.”
Single, Double & Triple “Dips” in a cone or cup. Vanilla, Chocolate or Flavor of the day.
